Fleas in a San Diego living room did not appear from nowhere, and they usually did not start as a yard-wide spray problem. UC IPM says the common flea in California is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. It attacks dogs and cats and will bite people. Adults live on the host. Eggs fall off into bedding and carpet. That split is the origin story.

The host is the factory

Unlike many fleas, adult cat fleas stay on the pet. UC IPM: feeding, mating, and egg laying happen on the animal. Females lay about 20 to 50 eggs per day. Eggs are smooth, pearly, about 1/32 inch, and they drop onto bedding and carpet. Larvae need protected, humid spots (UC IPM: at least 75% relative humidity) and feed on dried blood the adults produce. They are not living on your skin as a breeding population.

Dog fleas exist but are rare in California. Sticktight fleas show up on poultry and ground squirrels and can bother roaming pets. Ground squirrel fleas can carry plague in California wildlife, which is a vector-control fact, not a living-room diagnosis. Fleas on cats or dogs here are almost always cat fleas.

Wildlife keeps outdoor numbers up: feral cats, opossums, squirrels, coyotes. UC IPM says to limit food, water, and shelter for those animals on the property. A La Jolla patio with pet bowls left out overnight is a buffet. A City Heights yard with opossums under a deck is a reservoir. Coastal humidity helps larvae. Inland heat is harder on them in open sun. Larvae fail in sunlight and heavy foot traffic. They succeed in shaded kennels, crawl spaces, and the underside of a couch.

People hitchhike them too, but less often than pets. Visiting dogs, a used rug, or a house sitter’s animal move eggs and adults. Vacant rentals surprise new tenants when walking the carpet stimulates adults to emerge from cocoons. UC IPM notes fully formed fleas can remain in cocoons up to 12 months in the cool, and that warmth plus pressure from walking or vacuuming stimulates emergence. At room temperature the whole cycle can run in about 18 days.

This page is origin. Treatment sequence, vacuuming, and on-pet products live on the existing flea treatment in San Diego guide. Do not collapse those jobs. Origin answers “how did they get in.” That guide answers “what has to move together to break the cycle.”

What origin is not

Origin is not a bite diagnosis. Fleabites are a small red spot with a halo, usually without huge swelling, per UC IPM. They overlap with other itches. Bed bugs, bird mites, mosquitoes, and “chigger” searches all steal this query. If there is no pet and the marks are on the waistline after a hotel stay, start with where bed bugs come from. If a nest just came off the eave, start with bird mites. If the story is a canyon trail, start with chiggers in San Diego County and ticks, not a carpet powder.

Origin is not a yard fog. UC IPM says outdoor sprays are occasionally needed when pets sleep outside and numbers are high, aimed at those rest areas, not the whole lawn. Preferred on-pet products usually prevent reinfestation without a broadcast spray. Consumer foggers indoors have the same problem they have with other hiding insects: they miss the pupae in the carpet base.

HomeGuide puts a one-time flea visit at $200 to $400 as of 2026, including inspection and treatment, with annual contracts listed at $300 to $600. That is a national guide row, not a Pest Pros price. The matched company inspects first and quotes in writing. This brand has no flea fee schedule.

Adults are no larger than 1/8 inch, reddish-brown, wingless, and compressed side to side. If something is flying, it is not a flea. Flea spray in the house covers what a can cannot reach.

What to have ready for a licensed visit

Name the animals, where they sleep, whether they go to dog parks or the beach, and which rooms you are being bitten in. Photograph the rest area. Wash pet bedding hot. Vacuum, then keep the bag sealed, which is sanitation UC IPM already recommends.

Ask the company to separate on-animal work (often a veterinarian) from indoor rest-area work and any outdoor rest-area work. Mixing those in one vague “flea spray” quote is how you pay twice. Flea and tick treatment is the structural pest path we match. Confirm Branch 2 on the SPCB search.

Pest Pros San Diego does not treat pets, carpets, or yards. We match you with licensed local companies. Tell them about kids and other pets before any indoor product. Read the EPA pesticide-safety pages for label rules.

If ticks are part of the same yard, say so. They are a different biology and a different outdoor inspection. Do not assume a flea origin story covers a canyon tick.

When to call us

Call when people are being bitten at home, when a vacant carpet “explodes” with fleas after you walk it, or when pet treatment alone has not stopped indoor activity. Origin tells you where the eggs dropped. A licensed inspection still has to see those rooms. Call us at (858) 400-6561 and we’ll match you with a licensed local pro.
