Bed bugs in a San Diego bedroom almost never start as a sanitation grade. UC IPM says people bring them in on luggage, clothes, bedding, furniture, and other objects, often after hotels or overnight stays. Second-hand mattresses and furniture are high-risk sources. Dirt is not the requirement.

The paths that actually move them

The common bed bug in California is Cimex lectularius. UC IPM describes adults as about 1/5 inch, flattened, oval, and rusty red. They hide in mattress seams, box springs, furniture cracks, and belongings near sleep. They feed on blood. They do not require a filthy room.

Travel is the path people skip. UC IPM’s prevention notes: inspect hotel mattress seams and headboards, change rooms if you find signs, inspect luggage before you leave, and wash and dry clothes hot when you get home. Store luggage out of the bedroom if you travel often. That list is for a Clairemont condo after a work trip the same way it is for a downtown hotel.

Used furniture is the second path. UC IPM names second-hand mattresses and furniture as known high-risk sources. Inspect before the piece comes inside. If you are discarding an infested item, do not leave it on the curb for someone else. Mark it and take it to disposal.

Shared housing concentrates introductions. UC IPM lists hotels, homeless shelters, furnished apartments, and dormitories as most at risk. In San Diego that includes PB rentals, downtown SRO-style buildings, military housing, and SDSU-area units with turnover. Bugs also move between units in multi-family buildings. One clean apartment can receive them through walls, electrical penetrations, or a visitor’s bag.

Theaters, buses, and trains are occasional pickup sites, per UC IPM. They are not the main local story. A single public-seat encounter is hard to prove. What you can prove is insects or fecal spots in your own bed.

They are not flying in from the canyon. Adults are wingless. They crawl. They hitchhike. If you have a flying bug at a porch light, look at kissing bugs in San Diego County or a different insect. If bites started after a bird nest came down, read bird mites.

Bat bugs and swallow bugs are relatives that sometimes bite people. UC IPM says you tell them from bed bugs by hair length on the pronotum versus eye diameter, which needs magnification. Host management (bats, swallows) is the difference. Guessing from a welt will not get you there.

What origin does not prove about your house

Knowing the path does not confirm you have them. UC IPM is explicit: bite marks are not a diagnosis. Several household pests bite, and reactions vary. Confirmation is the insect or its signs: fecal spots, blood spots, eggs, shed skins.

About 85% of bugs are found in or near the bed, so inspections start at the mattress, box spring, frame, and headboard. The rest hide in other upholstered furniture, cabinets, baseboards, wallpaper edges, and similar cracks, usually within a few feet of where people sleep.

Adults can survive a long time without a meal. UC IPM cites 20 to 400 days depending on temperature and humidity, and laboratory survival over 400 days in the cold. A quiet week after a trip is not clearance. A quiet month after you threw out a couch is not clearance either.

Consumer foggers fail this insect. UC IPM says total-release aerosols are not effective for bed bugs and can be harmful. Heat, vacuuming, laundry, encasements, and a licensed company with the right products are the public guidance. The brand you are reading does not apply those methods. Pest Pros San Diego matches you with licensed local companies. Bed bug work is Branch 2 structural pest control. Confirm the firm on the SPCB search.

If you rent, tell the owner. Tenants have rights, and adjoining units matter. Our San Diego renters’ bed bug guide covers that conversation. Property managers should look at bed bug plans for San Diego property managers.

Do not read origin as blame. A Mission Valley hotel bag and a North Park Craigslist dresser are both introductions. The inspection still has to find the insect in this address.

What to do before a licensed inspection

Photograph seams, spots, and any insect you catch. Put specimens in a clear container. Do not throw out the whole bedroom until someone has looked. You can erase the evidence an inspector needs.

Wash bedding hot and dry on high if the fabric allows. UC IPM notes a home dryer at the hottest setting for at least 10 to 15 minutes can kill bugs and eggs in clothing and bedding that can take the heat. Vacuum seams. Do not fog.

Reduce clutter near the bed so hiding places shrink. Pull the bed slightly off the wall if you can. Encasements designed for bed bugs can trap insects already in a mattress you are not discarding. They are a tool, not a treatment by themselves.

Then call for an inspection rather than a product. Bed bug treatment through our network starts with the company seeing the room. Ask what monitoring they use, whether dogs if any are third-party certified, and how they will check adjoining rooms in a stacked building. Heat, chemicals, and fumigation are different scopes with different prep. Fumigation, if proposed, is Branch 1, with a signed occupant notice. Do not mix those in your head from an ad.

For what the bugs look like on fabric, stay with bed bug signs on sheets. Origin is this page. Signs are that one. Treatment questions sit on the heat and cost pieces already on the site.

When to call us

Call after a trip when you find spots or insects in the bed, after bringing home used furniture, or when more than one person in a unit is waking up with unexplained welts and you need the insect identified. Origin stories help the inspector. They do not replace one. Call us at (858) 400-6561 and we’ll match you with a licensed local pro.
